Chapter Seventeen
Callum
Iâd told Halle the truth when I shared that I didnât know why Vera wanted to meet. Weâd agreed to meet up later that day and follow Joshua around a bit, but the plans had obviously changed. Veraâs texts were straight to the point and vague, just like they always tended to be. Like the morning before, she asked that we meet her at the luxury apartment she kept in the city. Halle was quiet the entire drive from her apartment into Veraâs high-rise in the Loop. She kept her head turned, eyeing the busy streets and tall buildings as I drove. While she didnât look or talk to me, she kept her hand clasped firmly in hers as they rested on her thick thigh.
I wasnât sure what to say to herâor whether or not there was anything that needed to be said at allâso I was quiet. We were greeted by a valet as we pulled up to Veraâs building. After I handed him my keys, we were ushered into the building by a doorman who lead us into the elevator and entered the details for the penthouse.
âYou donât need to be nervous, Halle,â I told her, desperate to break our silence. âI wonât let anything happen to you.â
âOh, Iâm not scared,â she answered, turning to me. âIâm just trying to get my head in the game.â
I couldnât help but bark out a laugh.
âGet your head in the game? What the hell are you talking about?â
âI donât want your Russian mob friend to think Iâm stupid.â
I turned to her, placing a hand on her shoulder to prompt her body to face mine. I looked at her silently for a second, her supple brown skin glowing even under the fluorescents. She was so beautiful, it nearly stopped my thoughts.
âIt doesnât matter what Vera thinks. I know youâre serious about this, and you do too. You donât have to prove shit to her.â Halle didnât look fully convinced, but she nodded anyway. I didnât have the time to convince her, though, because Vera appeared as soon as the door of the elevator opened up into his penthouse. She didnât greet me as he normally did, instead running her blue eyes up and down Halleâs form. I could tell that her gaze was scrutinizing, but it also held a suspicious amount of appreciation. That, I didnât like. Vera was intense â she was maybe the most unrelenting person Iâd ever met, and I didnât want her making Halle more anxious than she already was.
Subtly, I moved in front of Halle, forcing Vera to look at me. I narrowed my eyes and steeled my jaw. Her face broke almost instantly, the small scar on her right cheek cratering as she grinned at me and raised both of her hands.
âCallum, brother, so good to see you again.â She walked closer, roughly clasping and shaking my shoulders. âYou look better today. You rested well last night, eh?â
I rolled my eyes at her, not bothering to bless her with a reply.
