Chapter Seventeen

Callum

I’d told Halle the truth when I shared that I didn’t know why Vera wanted to meet. We’d agreed to meet up later that day and follow Joshua around a bit, but the plans had obviously changed. Vera’s texts were straight to the point and vague, just like they always tended to be. Like the morning before, she asked that we meet her at the luxury apartment she kept in the city. Halle was quiet the entire drive from her apartment into Vera’s high-rise in the Loop. She kept her head turned, eyeing the busy streets and tall buildings as I drove. While she didn’t look or talk to me, she kept her hand clasped firmly in hers as they rested on her thick thigh.

I wasn’t sure what to say to her—or whether or not there was anything that needed to be said at all—so I was quiet. We were greeted by a valet as we pulled up to Vera’s building. After I handed him my keys, we were ushered into the building by a doorman who lead us into the elevator and entered the details for the penthouse.

“You don’t need to be nervous, Halle,” I told her, desperate to break our silence. “I won’t let anything happen to you.”

“Oh, I’m not scared,” she answered, turning to me. “I’m just trying to get my head in the game.”

I couldn’t help but bark out a laugh.

“Get your head in the game? What the hell are you talking about?”

“I don’t want your Russian mob friend to think I’m stupid.”

I turned to her, placing a hand on her shoulder to prompt her body to face mine. I looked at her silently for a second, her supple brown skin glowing even under the fluorescents. She was so beautiful, it nearly stopped my thoughts.

“It doesn’t matter what Vera thinks. I know you’re serious about this, and you do too. You don’t have to prove shit to her.” Halle didn’t look fully convinced, but she nodded anyway. I didn’t have the time to convince her, though, because Vera appeared as soon as the door of the elevator opened up into his penthouse. She didn’t greet me as he normally did, instead running her blue eyes up and down Halle’s form. I could tell that her gaze was scrutinizing, but it also held a suspicious amount of appreciation. That, I didn’t like. Vera was intense – she was maybe the most unrelenting person I’d ever met, and I didn’t want her making Halle more anxious than she already was.

Subtly, I moved in front of Halle, forcing Vera to look at me. I narrowed my eyes and steeled my jaw. Her face broke almost instantly, the small scar on her right cheek cratering as she grinned at me and raised both of her hands.

“Callum, brother, so good to see you again.” She walked closer, roughly clasping and shaking my shoulders. “You look better today. You rested well last night, eh?”

I rolled my eyes at her, not bothering to bless her with a reply.
